Azelaic Acid is effective in reducing the number of inflammatory papules (inflamed pimples) and pustules (pimples solidly filled with pus) associated with mild to moderate rosacea. Azalex Gel contains a well-balanced blend of azelaic acid, glycosaminoglycans and botanical extracts. Research shows that use of these ingredients reduces the appearance of rosacea by 41% after 8 weeks and noticeable reduction of redness after 7 weeks. Studies also show a noticeable increase in skin brightness after 7 weeks and effective reduction of the number of pimples in 12 weeks. For me, it doesn't work as well as benzoyl peroxide as far as acne-clearing goes, but it has made my sensitive red skin a bit brighter in the few weeks I've been using it. Benzoyl peroxide has caused me a lot of discoloration, and this product definitely seems to be helping in that area. I've noticed no change in acne eruptions though (I get about one or two cystic underground pimples per month). And yes, it does sting quite a bit, but I use it in combination with the benzoyl peroxide, so that's probably why. 1 of 1 found this review helpful: Update for Benev Gel, 2006-05-26 Still going strong. This stuff is a dream come true. The bottle lasts me about 2 months so it actually is cheaper than some of the other stuff out there. I would not trade this stuff for anything. I have had only 2 cystic pimples since I started using Benev Azalex Gel and both of them were not painful and only lasted a day or two before they went away. This is the first time that I have gone out of my way to write a review for something but I have to share it with my fellow cystic acne sufferers. If you are the type of person who has extreme acne all over, this product may not work for you. But, if you are like me and get one of two really painful (sometimes even invisible) cystic-like pimples a month, this stuff is for you. I started using it 3 weeks ago and can already tell a difference. I have tried everything from Rx to OTC. Nothing worked for me. What I like about this gel is that doesn't dry my skin out or irritate it. In fact, my skin looks so much brighter. Although it says it is for rosacea, I did my research. This stuff can and has been used to combat cystic acne. Seriously, you have to at least try it. Only drawbacks: the price, pretty steep, and for the first week or so it really stings when you first put it on for about 15 minutes or so. Small price to pay for me. Please, please, please...try it.
